Bain scores brace as Huskies defeat Mounties 3-0; clinch playoff berth

HALIFAX, NS – Saint Mary's defender Woody Bain scored a pair of goals, helping lead the Huskies to a 3-0 win over the Mount Allison Mounties on Saturday afternoon at Huskies Stadium.

Prior to the Huskies final match of the season, they honoured graduating seniors Adam Dunsworth, James Spence, and Kaveh Wornell ahead of their final game at Huskies Stadium.

The game kicked off with thrilling intensity. In the 5th minute, Mounties forward Jack Bennett (Falmouth, NS) sent a through ball to Tevin Lewis (Nassau, Bahamas), setting up a 1v1 situation with the Huskies' goalkeeper, Ryan Davis (Lake Loon, NS). However, Davis denied the Mounties an early lead.

Responding swiftly, the Huskies launched a threatening counterattack in the 5th minute. Despite three shots on target being thwarted by the goalkeeper Artie Fotheringham (London, ENG) and impressive blocks from the Mounties defence, the ball eventually found its way to Ben Kloppenburg (Halifax, NS), who unleashed a powerful shot straight to the top corner, granting the Huskies an early 1-0 lead.

The Huskies would double their lead in the 40th minute when Sean Freeman's (Halifax, NS) beautiful back-heel assist found Woody Bain (Dartmouth, NS), who smashed the ball into the net. Fotheringham got a hand on it, but the shot was too powerful, doubling the Huskies lead to 2-0 going in the second half.

The second half was a defensive showdown, as neither team had too many defining offensive chances. This changed in the 81st minute when Huskies forward Colby Mercer (Beaverbank, NS) was brought down in the penalty box and was awarded a penalty. As the stadium collectively held its breath, Woody Bain calmly shot the ball from the spot into the goal, sending Fotheringham the wrong way and sealing the Huskies victory 3-0.

The Player of the Match was Woody Bain for his two goals and fantastic performance.

The Huskies conclude the season with a record of 5-4-3, good for the fifth spot in the AUS Standings, and will be competing at the AUS Championship Playoffs, hosted by the Cape Breton Capers, Oct. 26-29 in Sydney, N.S. They'll face the fourth seed Memorial Sea-Hawks (6-5-1) in the quarterfinal.

The Mounties finish the season with a record of 1-9-2, and will miss the playoffs.
