Andrew Peverill wins 1500m and qualifies for the U Sport Championship
(Halifax, NS) The Huskies competed at the Athletics Nova Scotia Open, hosted at the Canada Games Centre in Halifax January 18 & 19. With most of the AUS schools in attendance, it created some competitive events and an electric atmosphere.
The highlight of the meet was the men's 1500m, where Andrew Peverill achieved an USports Auto Qualifying Standard with a time of 3:50.02. It was an exciting race, with older brother Jonathan Peverill pacing Andrew and Angus Rawling of St.FX (the 2018 USports 3000m champion) through the first 600m.
Andrew and Rawling battled back and forth, with the large crowd of SMU and St.FX supporters on the back-stretch cheering louder and louder with each passing lap. On the bell lap Peverill kicked hard to take the win and achieve USports standard.
This currently ranks him #1 in the country for the 1500m and breaks his previous SMU school record in the event.
In the women's 1000m, Bhreagh Burke continued her strong start in her rookie track season with the Huskies, placing 2nd in a time of 2:57.40. With Burke starting the race in the middle of the pack, she quickly moved up each lap, until she was within striking distance of many of the top women. Burke's strong finishing quick gave her not only a 2nd finish and a #14 ranking in the country for the 1000m.
In the men's 1000m, a trio of Huskies all captured personal bests. Jonathan Peverill finished 4th in the event with a time of 2:31.17, which now ranks him #14 in the country for the event. Kyle Caie and Stephen Goodyear finished just behind in 5th and 6th with times of 2:34.87 and 2:36.54 respectively.
On Friday night, the 3000m was held and both Joe Stewart (9:07.56) and Ian MacDonald (9:24.29) raced to personal bests, while also finishing with personal bests the next day in the 1500m. Stewart finished in 4:12.43 and MacDonald in 4:21.87.
The Huskies will be represented by 8 athletes this weekend in Montreal at the McGill Team Challenge. Best of luck to Andrew Peverill, Bhreagh Burke, Ashley Murray, Jonathan Peverill, Kyle Caie, Stephen Goodyear, Joe Stewart and Jack Fader.
