U Sports Track and Field Championships

Andrew Peverill was the sole Husky representing Saint Mary's at the U Sports Track and Field Championships in Edmonton, after qualifying for both the 1000m and 1500m.

Peverill entered the championships ranked 4th in the 1000m and 8th in the 1500m.

On day two of competition, the 1000m was contested with a tight spread of athletes surging back and forth for five laps. In the end, Peverill finished 8th in a time of 2:29.21. Eric Lutz of Calgary took home gold in a time of 2:23.35.

The following day, the 1500m took place with a high-quality field of runners. Right from the gun Peverill slotted himself behind the leaders of the pack. With the pace slow to start, characteristic of tactical championship racing, the suspense of who would make the first move started to get to the athletes. Like racehorses in their gates, the jostling around and tripping over each other would become apparent with Peverill receiving several large gashes on his legs from opponents' spikes. With the sound of the bell on the final lap, Eric Lutz kickrf home in a time of 3:53.44 to take his second gold of the championships, with Peverill finished 7th in a time of 3:57.06.

The Guelph Gryphons took home both the Men's and Women's National Championship banners with scores of 139 and 138 respectively. The SMU Huskies finished tied for 21st in men's team standings from Peverill's points total, tying the Queen's Gaels and Lakehead Thunderwolves.

Congratulations to Andrew on an excellent season!
