Huskies host SMU Open in final competition before AUS Championships

In their last competition before the AUS Championships, the Huskies played host to the 2024 SMU Open at the Canada Games Centre in Halifax. Rounding into form at the right time, the Huskies took home multiple podium finishes, personal bests, and a new school record.

The sprinters had a phenomenal day on the track. Chad Smith continued his sensational rookie season, running to his 4th straight 60m win while going sub 7 for the first time with a new personal best of 6.98 seconds. This time ranks Smith 2nd in the AUS standings. Teammate Jaiden Williams crossed the line in 7.10 to snatch 3rd place in the 60m, and Braden Marshall also took 3rd place in the men's 300m race with a new personal best of 39.45. On the women's side, the entire Huskies female sprints team took home new PB's in both the 60m and 300m races (see below).

On the distance side, Eli Ford won 2nd place in the men's 600m with a huge new PB of 1:26.91. Captain Rory McGarvey also got on the podium, winning 3rd place in the men's 3000m with a new PB of 8:44.42. As for the jumpers, 4th year athlete Eric Wall placed 2nd in the men's high jump at a height of 1.90m in his first meet back after an injury.

To cap off a great day at the track, the Huskies men's 4x200m relay team (Jaiden Williams, Oliver Gavel, Chad Smith and Innis MacMullin) ran to another new school record, taking the win and beating their record from last weekend with a time of 1:31.88. This performance ranks the men 1st in the AUS standings and 13th in U SPORTS.

The Huskies will take this momentum into the AUS Championships, which are being held in Moncton, NB on February 23rd-24th. The championships will be live streamed on https://austv.ca/.
