Huskies track & field athletes put up solid performances at 2024 U SPORTS Track & Field Championships in Winnipeg

WINNIPEG, MB - Several Saint Mary's Huskies student-athletes competed at the 2024 U SPORTS Track & Field Championships this weekend in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

On day one, the Huskies men's team of Jaiden Williams, Oliver Gavel, Chad Smith and Innis MacMullin competed in the 4x200m relay. Despite starting off strong, the team faced an unexpected baton drop at an intense point in the race which resulted in their disqualification.

The moment marks the end of an outstanding season for the relay team, which included setting a new Saint Mary's school record and securing this hard-earned spot on the national stage with a gold AUS medal. Despite the unexpected outcome at the meet, the team maintains a positive outlook, and are eager to use this experience to fuel an even more impressive season next year.

On day two of the U SPORTS Championships, a pair of Huskies field athletes put up impressive performances at the national level.

High jumper Eric Wall, the 2024 AUS gold medalist, engaged in fierce competition and ultimately secured 12th place in the national championships with a jump of 1.90 meters.

Wall easily cleared heights of 1.80m and 1.85m early on in the competition, before soaring over 1.90m with ease on his very first attempt. Following this, the bar was raised to 1.95m, and after 3 nail-biting and close attempts, Wall was unable to surpass the 1.95m mark, instead securing his impressive position of 12th in the country.

On the other side of the field, Katie Pegg demonstrated an impressive showing at her first ever U SPORTS competition, and continued her recent streak of success, securing top placing in the Women's Shot Put F46 Para category with an outstanding throw of 10.96 meters.

As the other Huskies athletes prepare to head back to the East Coast, Pegg will instead venture West with her coach, Jodi Langley, to a Team Canada training camp in Victoria, B.C as she prepares for the 2024 World Para Athletics Championships.

The exceptional results achieved by both these athletes at this highly competitive meet showcase the effort, talent and dedication within the Huskies team.

As the championships move into the third and final day of events, the focus shifts to thrower Mason Dunlop, the last remaining Huskies competitor. Dunlop, who will participate in the Men's Shot Put on Saturday, is currently ranked 12th in the country, and his upcoming performance is eagerly anticipated.
