SMU splits weekend with 71-56 win over MUN

(HALIFAX, N.S.)--The SMU Huskies defeated the Memorial Sea-Hawks 71-56 on Sunday afternoon in AUS women's basketball action from the Homburg Centre.

 

The win improves Saint Mary's to 13-3 (32 points) and grabs a share of first place with 11-6 UPEI.

 

Memorial falls to 8-8 (22 points) and 5th place, four points up on 7-9 UNB.

 

The Huskies built a 20-16 first quarter lead and went into the half leading 36-31.

 

A 19-6 third quarter run put the Huskies up 55-37 after 30 minutes.

 

Memorial outscored SMU 19-16 in the fourth quarter and the Huskies held on for the 71-56 win.

 

Douglas, Arizona native Tianna Brown paced the Sea-Hawks with 11 points while Kelia Pond (Goulds, NL) and Megan Robinson (Waterloo, ON) had nine points apiece.

 

Angelina Carvery (Halifax, NS) had the hot Huskies hand, dropping 17 points on 4-5 3PT shooting while teammates Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse (Montreal, QC) had 12 points and Espoo, Finland native Emma Valikoski had 11.

 

Rounding out the SMU scoring on the afternoon was Laura Langille (Bedford, NS) with nine points, Shanicka Wood (Ajax, ON) eight points, Katrina Murrell (Markham, ON) six, Alexandra Smye (Halifax, NS) five points and Carlie Nugent (Richmond Hill, ON) finished with three points.

 

Veronica Vaickus (Baie-Comeau, QC) finished with a rebound in the Huskies win.

 

SMU returns to action hosting 3-13 Acadia this Wednesday at 6pm from the Homburg Centre.
