(Halifax, N.S.)-- The SMU Huskies defeated the University of Windsor Lancers 73-59 in CIS women's pre-season basketball action Sunday afternoon from the Homburg Centre on campus at Saint Mary's University.
The Huskies took the opening quarter 22-17 using an 11-0 run on three straight three-point plays to start the quarter 14-4. Windsor answered with a 5-0 run to trim the SMU lead to 14-9.
Windsor opened the second quarter on a 8-0 run to claw back and take a 25-22 lead. A SMU three-pointer ended the Lancer run and tied things up 25 all. SMU stole the inbound pass and scored on an easy lay up, regaining a 27-25 lead.
A Windsor bucket and SMU free throw had the Huskies up 28-27 when an offensive rebound led to a bucket, increasing the SMU lead 30-27. Both teams traded baskets until two late Windsor free-throws had it even 35-35.
A SMU basket in the final minute gave the Huskies a 37-35 lead. Windsor outscored SMU 18-15 in the quarter.
SMU was in mid-season form starting the third quarter. The Huskies outpaced the Lancers 26-11 and took a 63-46 lead heading into the final frame. Windsor held a 13-10 scoring advantage in the final frame with SMU holding on to the 73-59 victory.
This was the final pre-season tune up for the Huskies, who picked up wins over Western (69-67), Laurentian (73-58), Nipissing (69-31), Alberta (71-64), and StFX (71-50) and dropped a 59-54 contest to Brock .
AUS play opens up November 7-8th at Memorial. The home-opener is November 15th versus UPEI at 2pm.
