Thunder Selects CIS Holiday Classic Day 2 highlights women's basketball action

 

Day 2 of the Thunder Selects CIS Holiday Classic treated basketball fans to four games Tuesday.

 

The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the UPEI Panthers 80-64 Tuesday night from the Homburg Centre.

 

Rachelle Coward (Dartmouth, NS) poured in 30 points for SMU, shooting 8-12 from three-point land.

 

Saint Mary's opened up a 29-20 first quarter lead and used a 19-10 second quarter score to jump out to a 48-30 halftime lead.

 

An even 18-18 third quarter saw SMU up 66-48 after 30 minutes.

 

UPEI outscored SMU 16-14 in the final frame yet SMU held on for an 80-64 victory.

 

Chicago, Illinois native Angenay Williams lead all scorers with 31 points for UPEI while teammate Jane McLaughlin (Fortune, PE) added 13 points in the loss.

 

SMU's Shanieka Wood added 15 points on 7-8 shooting from the floor.

 

Earlier action saw the Dal Tigers defeat the Brock Badgers 64-60.

 

Halifax native Tessa Stammberger paced the Tigers' with 24 points while teammates Diedre Alexander (Woodstock, NB) and Christina Brown (Timberlea, NS) each added 11 points.

 

Dal led 24-14 after 10 minutes and trailed 34-33 at half.

 

A 17-9 third quarter saw Dal up 50-43 and a 17-14 Brock fourth quarter saw Dal hold on to a 64-60 win.

 

Brock's Kira Cornelissen (Aylmer, ON) and Melissa Tatti (Ancaster, ON) added 16 and 15 points respectively.

 

The Carleton Ravens defeated the Lakehead Thunderwolves 50-33 on 10 points each from Lindsay Shotbolt (Markham, ON) and Heather Lindsay (Ottawa).

 

Carleton led 13-6 after 10 minutes and 27-13 at half.

 

An 11-9 Carleton third quarter saw the Ravens' lead 38-22 and a 12-11 final frame saw Carleton cruise to a 50-33 victory.

 

A trio of Thunderwolves – Katelyn Zen (North Bay, ON), Gillian Lavoie (Thunder Bay, ON) and Blair McNaughton (Kitchener, ON) – added six points each in the loss.

 

The University of Winnipeg Wesmen upended the Acadia Axewomen 76-58 on 22 points from Megan Noonan.

 

Noonan, the Winnipeg, MB native paced all scorers while teammates Skylar Boulanger (Winnipeg, MB) had 14 points and German national Lena Wenke (Gottingen, Lower Saxony) chipped in 13.

 

Quarter scores of 25-17 and 13-9 saw Winnipeg up 38-26 at half.

 

A Wesmen 26-18 third quarter increased Winnipeg's lead 64-44.

 

A 14-12 Acadia final frame saw Winnipeg hold on to a 76-58 victory.

 

Halifax's Chanel Smith paced Acadia with 18 points in the loss.

 

Wednesday's Day 3 schedule includes: Lakehead versus Brock (9am), Carleton takes on Dal (11am), UPEI faces Acadia (1pm) and SMU hosts Winnipeg (3pm).
