Huskies edge Winnipeg 59-58 to capture Holiday tournament

Down six points entering the fourth quarter, the Saint Mary's University Huskies outscored the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 21-14 in the quarter and earned a 59-58 victory.

 

SMU's Rachelle Coward (Darmouth, NS) had seven points in the final frame, including two three-pointers leading all scorers with 20 points on the afternoon.

 

SMU's Laura Langille's (Bedford, NS) three-pointer with 56 seconds left tied the game 58-58.

 

A Wesmen foul put SMU's Kennisha-Shanice Luberisse (Montreal, QC) on the line with 17 seconds left.

 

Luberisse's single free throw sealed the win for Saint Mary's 59-58.

 

SMU shot 5-13 from beyond the three-point arc and made 6-10 foul shots in the final frame.

 

Winnipeg led 23-20 after 10 minutes and trailed SMU 32-28 at half.

 

A 16-6 Wesmen third quarter had Winnipeg leading 44-38 after 30 minutes.

 

Shanieka Wood (Ajax, ON) had nine points in the SMU win while Langille finished with six points and Luberisse had five.

 

A trio of Winnipeg, Manitoba natives - Kerri Kuzbyt, Skylar Boulanger and Megan Noonan – had 14, 13 and nine points respectively.

 

Earlier action Wednesday saw the Lakehead Thunderwolves defeat the Brock Badgers 81-66.

 

Katelyn Andrea's (Thunder Bay, ON) double-double paced Lakehead in the win.

 

Andrea finished with 26 points and 15 rebounds while teammates Jerika Baldwin (Brantford, ON) and Blair McNaughton (Kitchener, ON) had 11 and 10 points each.

 

Lakehead opened up a 29-18 first quarter lead and had a 53-33 halftime cushion.

 

Brock outscored Lakehead 18-16 in the third quarter and trailed 69-51 after 30 minutes.

 

Brock continued the scoring pace 17-12 in the final frame and lost 81-66.

 

Melissa Tatti (Ancaster, ON) paced Lakehead with 14 points while Kira Cornelissen (Aylmer, ON) had 12 and Aryn Finley (Dresden, ON) 11.

 

The Carleton Ravens defeated the Dal Tigers 59-44 on the heels of Heather Lindsay's (Ottawa) 23 points and nine rebounds.

 

An 18-12 opening quarter saw Carleton extend their lead 34-18 at half.

 

Dal's 16-11 third quarter trimmed Carleton's lead 45-34. 

 

The Raven's used a 14-10 final frame and held onto a 59-44 win.

 

Carleton's Cynthia Dupont-Letourneau (Waterville, QC) had 12 points off the bench.

 

Halifax natives Tessa Srammberger had 18 points and Shalyn Field had seven.

 

No strangers to each other, the UPEI Panthers upended the Acadian Axewomen 77-56.

 

Tamara Tompkins (Centreville, NB) scored a game high 21 points for UPEI while teammates Angenay Williams (Chicago, Illinois) had 14 and Katie Donahue (Riverview, NB) finished with 13.

 

Chanel Smith (Halifax, ON) had 19 points for Acadia while Paloma Anderson (Phoenix, Arizona) had 14.

 

Tied 18-18 after 10 minutes, UPEI took a 32-25 halftime lead.

 

UPEI used a 22-15 third quarter pace to increase its lead 54-40 after 30 minutes.

 

A 19-16 final frame saw UPEI hold on to a 73-56 victory.
