Huskies announce commitment of Halifax Grammar guard Julia Black

Saint Mary's Huskies women's basketball head coach Scott Munro is pleased to announce the commitment of guard Julia Black for the 2023-24 season.

"I am extremely thankful for the opportunity to join Saint Mary's University in the fall, and to play at the next level under Coach Munro's leadership," says Black. "I am excited to compete, learn and grow as a student-athlete, and see where the next five years take me!"

A 5'10 guard out of Halifax Grammar School, Black has been one of the top high school players in the province over the past three years.

In the 2021-22 season, Black averaged over 18 points per game and was named a Metro High School All-Star, and in 2020 was named Halifax Grammar Female Athlete of the Year and Girl's Basketball Co-Most Valuable Player.

In addition to her career with Halifax Grammar, Julia has represented Basketball Nova Scotia at the 2022 Canada Games (6th overall finish), 2022 U17 Nationals (5th overall finish) and 2020 U15 Nationals, and will also be representing Nova Scotia at the 2023 North American Indigenous Games this summer.

"We are excited to add Julia to our line up for next September," says Huskies head coach Scott Munro. "Julia's shooting and athleticism will be a great addition to our team. Julia has played at a high level the last couple years, both in high school and representing Nova Scotia at National Championships. Julia has developed into one of the province's top players and we look forward to her joining our team here at Saint Mary's next fall."

Black will be studying Psychology in the Bachelor of Science program at Saint Mary's.

Huskies Women's Basketball are five-time AUS Champions and three-time National Medallists (Silver: 2013-14, Bronze: 2015-16 & 2012-13).
