Huskies top Tommies 4-2 in Exhibition

(Halifax, NS) The Saint Mary's Huskies defeated the St. Thomas Tommies 4-2 in AUS women's hockey exhibition action Sunday afternoon at Alumni Arena.

Saint Mary's opened the scoring when Caitlyn Schell (Waterford, ON) scored in the slot at 10:11 on the powerplay to make it 1-0 after the first period. In the second period, The Tommies got on the board when Lauren Henman (Cow Bay, NS) tallied on a partial breakaway at 14:17 to tie things up at 1-1. Saint Mary's wasted no time getting their lead back when Caitlyn Manning (Cambridge, ON) potted a marker from in close at 14:28 to make it 2-1. The Huskies increased their lead when Leandra Timmerman (Rathwell, MB) scored from the circle at 15:37 to make the score 3-1. Saint Mary's kept it up when Subway player of the game Brianna Soper (Oshawa, ON) tallied from in close at 18:54 to get their lead up to 4-1 after two periods. In the third, the Tommies got it to within two when Henman got her second of the game from the circle at 11:09, but that is as close as they would get.

The Huskies outshot the Tommies 28-18. Rebecca Clark (Keswick, ON) and Rebecca Weagle (Lunenburg, NS) combined to make 16 saves to get the win for the Huskies. Taylor Cooke (Brantford, ON) and Abby Clarke (Springdale, NL) teamed up to stop 24 shots in net for the Tommies.

Both teams begin the second half of their regular season against each other this Saturday at 3:00 pm in Fredericton.
