Moncton wins in Double OT to force game 3

MONCTON – A second overtime period goal by Katryne Villeneuve (Katherine Dubuc, Cassandra Labrie) lifted the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues (1-1) to a 2-1 win over the Saint Mary's University Huskies (1-1) Sunday, in Moncton in the second of the best 2 of 3 quarter final series game of Atlantic University Sport women's hockey at the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena.

Villeneuve, at 3:15 of the second overtime period playing four against four took advantage of a lot of traffic in front of the net to pound at the puck and send it in, after missing a golden opportunity earlier in the overtime to put the game away. The win evens the series at 1-1. Maëlle Rioux (Labrie, Janie Poitras), scored the first home town goal at 15:09 of the first following a goal by the visitors Miranda Hatt, at 7:06. There was no second and third period scoring. Both goaltenders frustrated players many times, Audrey Berthiaume making 28 saves for the Blue and Gold and 30 for her opponent, Rebecca Clark. Moncton did not score on five power plays and Saint Mary's was 0 for 3.

The third and deciding game will be played Tuesday at 7p.m. at the Halifax Civic Centre.

The winning team will advance to best of 3 semi-finals against either St. Thomas University Tommies or St. Francis Xavier University X-Women.
