Axe women blank Huskies in season opener

WOLFVILLE, N.S. - The Axewomen opened up the 2015 regular season with a lopsided 6-0 win over the visiting Saint Mary's Huskies in torential down pour during most of the game.

Third year striker Meghan Earle (Mt. Pearl, Nfld.) netted four goals in a row, while teammates Katie Ross (Bedford, N.S.) and Rachel Aucoin (Cheticamp, N.S.) added goals five and six. Earle struck with only four minutes off the clock and followed with a second goal only four minutes later. At the 31 minute mark Earle added her third goal of the game followed ten minutes later by her fourth and final goal.

Kaite Ross hammered home a goal with a minute remaining in the half to give Acadia an insurmountable 5-0 lead. Rookie midfielder Rachel Aucoin scored the only goal of the second half at the 77 minute mark.

Acadia head coach Amit Batra was happy with the season opening win. "Obviously you have to be pleased with a win that this. I think when we played in our best moments it was effective. Saint Mary's did well to regain their composure especially for a young team", pointed out Batra. "I would say there are things we can do better and more consistently over ninety minutes, so this is a good start but we have some work to do."

Jaqueline Blank (Cole Harbour, N.S.) made seven saves for the Huskies, while Acadia's Emma Connell (Hampton, N.S.) pulled in four saves.

The Axewomen head to Halifax on Sunday September 13 to take on the Dalhousie Tigers. The Huskies will host the Mount Allison Mounties on Sunday.
