SMU tops Moncton 2-1 in final home game

(HALIFAX, N.S.)—Senior Night at Saint Mary's saw the Huskies defeat the visiting Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues 2-1 on Friday evening in Atlantic University Sport women's soccer action from Huskies Stadium.

A scoreless but not quiet first half saw both teams with plenty of scoring opportunities—15 total shots—forced each goalie into early action.

SMU made five saves in the half compared to two for Moncton, as both teams were tied 0-0 at half.

Defender Genelle Morash (Chester, NS) opened the scoring in the 74^th minute with a left-footed rocket strike, beating Moncton keeper Chelsea Burnham quickly over her right side for a 1-0 Huskies lead.

Moncton answered three minutes later with a nifty play from Julie Gaudet to Natalie Fleming, who chipped in a left-footed shot, beating SMU rookie-keeper Grace Morrison (Halifax, NS) for the 1-1 equalizer.

Midfielder Fiorella Morales' (Bedford, NS) corner kick one minute later somehow found Hanna Dorey and second-year midfielder from Halifax put the Huskies up 2-1 in the 78^th minute.

Dorey's goal proved enough for Saint Mary's to see their Seniors win their final game at Huskies Stadium 2-1.

Burnham picked up the loss for Moncton, who fall to 2-7-2 and finish their season October 26^th at home versus Cape Breton at 3 p.m.

Morrison picks up the win for the Huskies who finish their season at 2-10-0.

Forward Megan Goodwin and Morales played their last games as Huskies on Friday with Itai Kuwodza (Harare, Zimbabwe), defender Lindsay MacDonald (Waverly, NS), midfielder Nicole Theriault (Lower Sackville, NS) and defender Alexa Tymkiw (Vernon, BC) finished their fourth year.
