Huskies and Tigers play to 1-1 draw in Halifax Derby

HALIFAX, NS - The Saint Mary's Huskies ventured down Robie Street to take on their rivals, the Dalhousie Tigers at Wickwire Field, and the tight Thursday night match ended in a 1-1 draw.

The game started at 5 pm and it did not take long for the Tigers to get to work, and nearly opened the score but Huskies keeper Grace Morrison (Halifax, N.S.) made a huge save on Elsie Evans (Toronto, Ont.).

At the 40th minute, Huskies forward Allie Martin (Halifax, N.S.) drove down the left side of the field and created chaos in the DAL box, but the Tigers somehow came up with a huge stop despite an imbalance in numbers.

After a back and forth half, the Huskies and Tigers found themselves still tied.

The Huskies exploded to enter the new half, and nearly opened the score with Martin finding Cara Freeman (Halifax, N.S.) in front of the net, but she sailed it over the net.

Dalhousie quickly rebuttelled with holding possession in the SMU end of the half, but they could not find the answer.

Just before the 50th minute Martin sent a beautiful ball across the field to find a streaking Erin Freeman (Halifax, N.S.) who put it past the Dalhousie's keeper to put the visitors in front 1-0.

The Tigers tried to answer, and nearly did, when DAL's Kaitlyn Clarke (Edmonton, Alta.)was found open on the right side, and tried to put it short side past the keeper, but Morrison made a massive save to keep their lead in tact.

Morrison kept up her great day by making huge point blank saves first on Paris Axam (Ottawa, ONT.)  on the right side, then bouncing right back to make a diving stop on Evans.

At the 74th minute, Emily Smith (Orleans, Ont.) found an open Olivia Jack (Stillwater Lake, N.S.) on the top of the box, who striked a low shot that bounced off the ground and past Morrison to equalize the match at 1-1.

Martin nearly got one past the DAL keeper, but chipped the ball a few inches to the left, and collided with the DAL keeper in the process.

Just a few moments later off of a free kick just outside the box, Erin Freeman beat the keeper but nailed the crossbar to keep the tie.

The game concluded with a 1-1 tie between the Halifax rivals.

Morrison continued her strong play in nets, making 10 saves for the Huskies, while Emily Toth stopped two shots for the Tigers.

The draw brought the Huskies record to 1-3-1 on the campaign, while the Tigers record stands at 2-2-1. Both teams will play at home on Sunday at 1 p.m., with the Tigers hosting the STFX X-Women, while the Huskies host the Cape Breton CAPERS for their home-opener. GET TICKETS
