Olivia Bell named Second Team All-Canadian, Taylor Lougheed named to U SPORTS All-Rookie team

A pair of Saint Mary's Huskies were honoured as All-Canadians at Thursday night's U SPORTS Women's Volleyball awards banquet in Vancouver, BC.

Fourth year left side Olivia Bell was named a U SPORTS Second Team All-Canadian for the second straight season, while first year setter Taylor Lougheed was named to the U SPORTS All-Rookie Team.

The announcement was made on Thursday night at the All-Canadian Awards Reception at the Sheraton Wall Centre in Vancouver, the host city of the 2023 U SPORTS Women's Volleyball Championship, presented by Mikasa.

A fourth year left side from LaHave, N.S., Olivia Bell has been named a U SPORTS Second Team All-Canadian for the second straight season. A three-time AUS First Team All-Star, Bell finished second in the AUS in points (313.5), kills (261), kills per set (3.43), and service aces (35), and eighth in digs (224). Bell was also named a U SPORTS Second Team All-Canadian in 2021-22, and the AUS Rookie of the Year in 2018-19.

A first year setter from Calgary, AB, Taylor Lougheed has been named to the U SPORTS All-Rookie Team. An AUS Second Team All-Star and AUS All-Rookie selection, Lougheed finished second in the AUS in assists per set (8.41), third in total assists (639), and led all first year players with 30 service aces and 24 block assists.

Other major award winners include Raya Surinx of Manitoba, who won the Rookie of the Year; Christina Stratford of McMaster, who won the Student-Athlete Community Service Award; and UQAM's Claude Tremblay, who won Coach of the Year.

The 2023 U SPORTS Women's Volleyball Championship, presented by Mikasa, gets underway on Friday at the War Memorial Gym in Vancouver, and play continues through to the gold medal game, which is set for 4:30 p.m. (Pacific Time) on Sunday. All 11 games of the tournament can be viewed on CBC Sports digital platforms (English) and at usports.ca (French).
