Saint Mary's Huskies to celebrate Black Heritage Night on Saturday, Feb. 1
HALIFAX, NS - The Saint Mary's University Department of Athletics is proud to announce its annual celebration of Black Heritage Month this February, including our Black Heritage Night on Saturday, February 1st.
Throughout the month, Saint Mary's University will be highlighting some of our many incredible Black student-athletes whose impacts and achievements are important pieces of Huskies history, today, and every day.
On February 1st, Saint Mary's hosts a Black Heritage Night 'triple-header' and will showcase a range of cultural events and activities.
- Women's Volleyball vs. UNB, 1 p.m. @ Homburg Centre
- Women's and Men's Basketball doubleheader vs. CBU, 6 & 8 p.m. @ Homburg Centre
- Women's Hockey vs. Dalhousie, 7 p.m. @ Dauphinee Centre
All four games will begin with a performance of the Black National Anthem 'Lift Every Voice' sung by Eriana Willis. Spectators can also expect to be entertained by the captivating drumming and dance performance by members of the Maritime Centre for African Dance during halftime of the basketball games.
The night games will feature a vendor market brought to you by the Black Business Initiative, offering a selection of unique products and services from six different local Black-owned businesses at the Homburg Centre Courtside Lounge. The pedway connecting the Homburg and Dauphinee Centre's will be open, giving fans of both sports the ability to check out the vendor market in the concourse of the Courtside Lounge.
In addition, through a partnership with the Black Cultural Centre of Nova Scotia, we will have informational displays regarding Black culture and heritage in Nova Scotia, on display in the Homburg Centre throughout the month of February.
"Black Heritage Day is a celebration of the rich cultural heritage of our Black community and we are thrilled to be able to offer this opportunity for our students, alumni, and wider community to come together and celebrate," said Scott Gray, Saint Mary's Director of Athletics and Recreation.
This is the third consecutive year that Saint Mary's Department of Athletics and Recognition has hosted a Black Heritage Night, with the ambition that this will provide a platform for the university to celebrate and recognize the contributions of Black Canadians and their impact on Canadian society.
