Huskies student-athletes raise record $27,000 for Special Olympics in annual MotionballU event

Over 120 Huskies student-athletes helped fundraise over $27,000 for Special Olympics Canada through this year's MotionballU event.

On Thursday, March 28, over 120 Huskies varsity athletes and 18 local Special Olympians came together at the Saint Mary's University Homburg Centre for a fun night of competition and friendship for a great cause.

"I really love this event because it gives everyone an opportunity to play sports and have fun, no matter who you are," says Huskies rugby player Lauren Young, who helped organize this year's event.

"It's also nice because it brings our community together - during our season as varsity athletes, we never really get to hang out or compete with each other, so this is a great opportunity for us to socialize and get to know each other, while also raising money for an amazing cause," added Young.

Across Canada, 28 different universities are holding MotionballU events, with Saint Mary's among the top fundraising schools, raising a new school record of $27,643 for Special Olympics Canada.

"It's just a great event. I feel like as a student-athlete, we have a duty to give back to our community and the Special Olympians in the area," said Huskies basketball player Jonah Crowther, who was the top individual fundraiser with $1,421 raised in donations. "Just meeting the Special Olympians, getting to know them, it's a competitive night but at the end of the day it's all about just having a good time."
