#6 ranked Gaiters hold off Huskies 19-14

LENNOXVILLE, Que. – In front of the biggest crowd at Coulter Field in more than a decade the No. 6 Bishop's Gaiters held on to beat the Saint Mary's Huskies 19-14 on homecoming Saturday in Lennoxville.

O'Shae Ho-Sang once again led the way for the Gaiters with 183 all-purpose yards and a touchdown on route to being named Bishop's Player of the Game.

Bishop's jumped out early when Justin Quirion connected with Nykolas Pierre-Masse for a four-yard touchdown late in the first quarter, the only score of the stanza. A 67-yard Joshua Jack (Brampton, ON) kickoff return was Saint Mary's lone burst of momentum before the break. That drive ended with a missed 40-yard field goal.

Defence reigned supreme in the second quarter.  Bishop's first forced a fumble midway through when Gabriel Royer sacked Huskies' pivot Allan Young (Halifax, NS). The Gaiters could only muster a field goal. Bishop's again had a drive going before Quirion was picked off in the end zone by Max Van Nieuwkoop (Burlington, ON). The Gaiters forced a safety on the ensuing drive to take a 12-0 halftime lead.

After a quiet third quarter Ho-Sang appeared to put the game out of reach when he scored his AUS leading eighth touchdown of the season at the 4:52 mark to put Bishop's up 19-0.

The Huskies offense then came to life as Young led an eight-play 57-yard drive to for their first major of the day, with running back Malik Williams (Ajax, ON) plunging in the end zone for a two-yard score.

The Huskies defense again snuffed out a Gaiters drive deep in their territory when Logan Mendes (Quispamsis, NB) picked off Quirion at the two-yard line.  Two plays later Young connected with Jack for a 78-yard catch and run to cut the Bishop's advantage to 19-14.

Bishop's was forced to give the ball back one more time to the Huskies but the Gaiters defense stood tall and a Royer sack on third and 18 sent the 2545 fans home happy.

The Gaiters outgained Saint Mary's 330-206 and ran 26 more offensive plays while holding the ball for 14 minutes longer on offense.

Quirion finished 19-39 with two touchdowns and two interceptions while Young was 9-24 with the two majors and a pick. Joshua Jack was the Saint Mary's Player of the Game.

The win improves Bisho's to 5-0 as they sit comfortably atop the AUS standings. Saint Mary's falls to 2-3.

Bishop's head to StFX (2-2) next Saturday for a match-up with the X-Men as the Bigg Bowl will be on the line. Saint Mary's hosts Acadia (2-3) on Friday night, 7 p.m. at Huskies Stadium. GET TICKETS
