REDS edge Huskies 60-58

FREDERICTON, NB - UNB guard Marcus Barnes hit a pair of crucial free throws with less than six seconds remaining to lift the UNB REDS to a nail-biting 60-58 victory over the Saint Mary's Huskies in Atlantic University Sport men's basketball action on Friday night in Fredericton, NB.

The Huskies dominated defensively in the second quarter, holding the REDS scoreless for almost eight minutes during a 9-0 run. Despite that, UNB clawed back to take a slim 25-22 lead into halftime.

With under a minute remaining in regulation, Huskies guard Jayrell Diggs (East Preston, NS) hit a clutch three to tie the game at 58-58. But on the ensuing possession, REDS guard Marcus Barnes was fouled and hit two from the line. The Huskies had one last chance but Jasha'jaun Downey's three was off as time expired.

Barnes led the REDS with 21 points, while teammates Conner Landell (St. Catharines, ON) and Mark Tobin (Mount Pearl, NL) contributed 14 points each.

Jasha'jaun Downey (North Preston, NS) paced the Huskies with 19 points in the loss, while Eliel Nsoseme (Kinshasa, DRC) posted a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double, adding five blocked shots.

The REDS win improves their record to 5-7 on the season. They'll be back in action on Friday, Jan. 24, visiting the Dalhousie Tigers (3-8) at 8 p.m. at the Dalplex.

Saint Mary's drops to 4-8 with the loss. The Huskies will be back in action next Friday, Jan. 24, as they visit the Memorial Sea-Hawks (7-5) in St. John's, NL, with tip-off at 7:30 p.m. ADT.
