Gentile, Da Fonseca lead Huskies to convincing 6-2 win over Tigers

HALIFAX, NS - Saint Mary's forward Derek Gentile and Charlie Da Fonseca each scored a goal and added two assists, leading the Huskies to a convincing 6-2 win over the Tigers to spoil Dalhousie's home opener on Friday night at the Halifax Forum.

The first period was intense with both teams scoring one goal a piece. The Huskies controlled most of the play, spending more time on the puck and creating more scoring opportunities.

Dalhousie's Jarett Baker (Black Rock, NS) scored the game's first goal, six minutes into the contest, with a wrist shot from the right faceoff circle.

Thirty-four seconds later SMU equalised. Huskies forward Will Chisholm (Lunenburg, NS) scored a contested rebound shot. Dalhousie's goalie Robbie Forbes (Oakville, ON) lost his stick just before the goal.

The Huskies wrapped up the first period with 30 shots on net compared to the Tigers seven. Dalhousie's Robbie Forbes (Oakville, ON) kept the Tigers in the game by stopping twenty-nine attempts.

In the second period, the Huskies quickly grew their lead with a goal twenty four seconds in. Huskies forward Charlie Da Fonseca (Thornhill, ON) scored the fast-break goal by going five-hole on the goalie.

Minutes later, Huskies forward Derek Gentile (Sydney, NS) stretched the lead to two by scoring off of a two-on-one fastbreak.

Controversy arose when Dalhousie seemingly scored, but milliseconds prior the ref blew the whistle, leading to confusion.

Dalhousie was able to regain the point with three minutes remaining, shrinking the lead to one. Alec Belanger (Quebec, PQ) scored for the Tigers.

In the third period, the Huskies outplayed the Tigers, expanding their lead to four goals. Goals from Saint Mary's Dennis Busby (Oro-Medonte, ON), Ben Allison (Halifax, NS), and Reid Valade (Caledon, ON) were the punctuation for the Huskies.

Saint Mary's defeated the Tigers 6-2 in a dominant performance. The Huskies had 54 shots to Dalhousie's 25, with Huskies goaltender Justin Sumarah (Halifax, NS) stopping 23 shots for his third win of the campaign.

Derek Gentile was awarded player of the game with one goal and two assists. Gentile's linemate Charlie Da Fonseca (one goal, two assists), forward Reid Valade (one goal, one assist) and defenceman Connor Olson (two assists) added multi-point efforts for the Huskies.

The Huskies win improves their record to 3-1-0 on the campaign. They'll return to home ice to host the Moncton Aigles Bleus (3-1-0) next Friday at 7 p.m. at the Dauphinee Centre.

The Tigers drop to 0-3-0 on the season, and will hit the road to Wolfville, NS to face the Acadia Axemen on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
