Huskies score three third period goals to defeat Aigles Bleus 3-1 in Moncton

MONCTON, NB - Saint Mary's forward Declan McDonnell score two of the team's three third period goals, as the Huskies came back to defeat the Moncton Aigles Bleus 3-1 in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey action on Wednesday night at the the J.-Louis-Lévesque Arena in Moncton.

Following a scoreless first period, Nathaël Roy (Olivier-Luc Haché, Yann-Félix Lapointe) gave the home team a 1-0 lead at the beginning of the second period. The two goaltenders then did as they did in the first, not allowing a puck to cross the red goal line.

On their 15th shot of the night, the Huskies finally beat Aigles Bleus goaltender Olivier Adam, as Declan McDonnell (Buffalo, NY) fed a pass to linemate Derek Gentile (Sydney, NS), who's initial shot was turned away by Adam, but McDonnell jumped on the rebound for a powerplay goal, tying the game at 1-1, 5:48 into the third period.

Several minutes later, the Huskies took the lead with another powerplay goal, as forward Nathan Dunkley (Campbellford, ON) was able to tip a Ben Roger (Brighton, ON) point shot past Adam, giving the Huskies a 2-1 lead at the 11:18 mark of the third period.

Despite a late charge from the Aigles Bleus, the Huskies were able to hold on for the win thanks to some great goaltending from Ben West (Barrie, ON), and McDonnell sealed the win with his second goal of the night, on an empty net with just eight seconds remaining.

Dunkley was selected the first star, Ben West the second and Nathaël Roy the third.

Goaltender Ben West saw 27 shots for the win and Olivier Adam took the loss with 21 shots. Saint Mary's was 2-for-7 on the power play and Moncton 0-for-2.
