Huskies dominate Tigers for 9-4 win

HALIFAX, NS - The Saint Mary's Huskies exploded for a season-high nine goals, as they defeated the Dalhousie Tigers 9-4 in Atlantic University Sport men's hockey action on Wednesday night at the Halifax Forum.

The Huskies opened the scoring just into two minutes into the game, as with the Tigers facing a delayed penalty, defenceman Dennis Busby (Oro-Medonte, ON) jumped on a loose puck in front of the net and beat Tigers goaltender Nicholas Chenard to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead, 2:21 into the first period.

Less than two minutes later, the Huskies doubled their lead as forward Derek Gentile (Sydney, NS) played a nifty pass to linemate Ben Allison (Halifax, NS) who stuffed it past Chenard to give the Huskies a 2-0 lead, 4:03 into the first.

Just over two minutes later, the Huskies scored another one, as Gentile set up defenceman Ben Roger (Brighton, ON) for a one-timer goal to give the Huskies a 3-0 lead, 6:37 into the period.

The Huskies added a powerplay goal just 25 seconds later, as Allison played a pass to Dennis Busby for a one-timer, his second goal of the night giving the Huskies a 4-0 lead, just 7:02 into play.

Dalhousie did respond with a goal from Brody Fournier at 16:14 in the first period, but the Huskies took a 4-1 lead into first intermission.

The Huskies added three more goals in the second period, beginning with forward Nathan Dunkley (Campbellford, ON) who stole the puck from a Tigers defender and snapped a shot past Chernard to make it 5-1, 6:14 into the second period.

It took just 48 seconds for the Huskies to strike again, as Declan McDonnell (Buffalo, NY) cleaned up the rebound of a Dunkley shot to make it 6-1 Saint Mary's, 7:02 into the second period.

The Tigers got two goals back in the second period, with Joseph Serpa scoring a powerplay goal at 11:36, and Liam Peyton scoring at 13:18.

At the 14:28 mark, Huskies forward Charlie Da Fonseca (Thornhill, ON) tipped in a point-shot from defenceman Jaxon Bellamy (Hampton, NB) for a powerplay goal, extending the lead to 7-3 through two periods.

The Huskies added two more goals in the final period - just over a minute into the third, forward Ben Boyd (Dartmouth, NS) took a great cross-ice pass from Declan McDonnell and put it past Tigers goaltender Alexander MacDonald to extend the lead to 8-3.

Dalhousie got one back as Joseph Serpa scored his second goal of the game at 1:23 in the third period.

But the Huskies had one more goal in them, and it came from defenceman Caelan McPhee (Ancaster, ON) who had a phenomenal effort to turn a breakaway into a wrap-around goal for the first marker of his AUS regular season goal.

Huskies defenceman Dennis Busby was named Player of the Game with two goals, while Nathan Dunkley (one goal, two assists), Ben Allison (one goal, two assists), Derek Gentile (three assists), Caelan McPhee (one goal, one assist), Ben Roger (one goal, one assist), Declan McDonnell (one goal, one assist), and Reid Valade (two assists) also recorded multi-point nights for the Huskies.

The Huskies outshot the Tigers 50-20 on the night, with Justin Sumarah stopping 16 shots for the win, while Tigers goaltenders Nicholas Chenard and Alexander MacDonald recorded 39 and two saves respectively.
