Dunkley’s hat-trick lifts Huskies to 7-3 win over Aigles Bleus in game three of AUS semifinal

HALIFAX, NS – Saint Mary's forward Nathan Dunkley scored a hat-trick, leading the Huskies to a 7-3 win over the Moncton Aigles Bleus in game three of the Atlantic University Sport men's hockey semifinal on Monday night at the Dauphinee Centre.

With the win, the Huskies take a 2-1 lead in the best-of-five semifinal, and will look to wrap up the series and punch their ticket to the AUS Final and U SPORTS Nationals on Tuesday, March 4, as they host the Aigles Bleus at the Dauphinee Centre with puck-drop scheduled for 7 p.m. GET TICKETS

The first quality scoring chance of the game occurred just over a minute into play, as Aigles Bleus forward Charles Edouard Drouin (St-Geroges-de-Beauce, QC) skated in on a partial breakaway, but his backhand attempt was denied by Huskies netminder Justin Sumarah (Halifax, NS).

The Huskies opened the scoring several minutes later, as forward Nathan Dunkley (Campbellford, ON) intercepted a pass at the Aigles Bleus blueline and skated in, firing a shot that initially appeared to be stopped by Moncton goaltender Nathan Darveau (Rouyn-Noranda, QC), but trickled through his pads to open the scoring 1-0, 5:18 into the first period.

Saint Mary's nearly doubled their lead with a powerplay opportunity minutes later, but Darveau made a great glove save on Huskies forward Reid Valade (Caledon, ON) to keep the deficit at one.

With just over three minutes remaining in the period, the Aigles Bleus got their chance at a powerplay and capitalized, with forward Remy Anglehart (Gascon, QC) pouncing on a rebound to score his third goal in the last two games, tying the game at 1-1, 16:29 into the first.

But the scoring wasn't done there – the Aigles Blues took a penalty off the ensuing faceoff and the Huskies instantly took advantage, as Nathan Dunkley redirected a pass from AUS MVP Derek Gentile (Sydney, NS) into the Moncton net. Dunkley's second goal of the period gave the hosts a 2-1 lead, 16:55 into the first.

The goals kept on coming as Aigles Bleus forward Nathael Roy (Levis, QC) took a pass from linemate Michael Cyr (Sainte-Anne, NB) and scored on a nice backhand finish to tie the game at 2-2, 17:14 into the first period.

The Aigles Bleus outshot the Huskies 20-13 in the first period, as the two teams went into the dressing room tied up at 2-2.

Just under five minutes into the second period, the Huskies took the lead again, as forward Jake Uberti (Toronto, ON) won a faceoff to linemate Charlie Da Fonseca (Thornhill, ON) who fired a shot that was deflected by an Aigles Bleus defenceman high into the air, and was gloved down by Uberti, who somehow transferred the puck onto his stick and in one motion, quickly fired a wicked backhand shot that beat Darveau to put Saint Mary's ahead 3-2, 4:29 into the second period.

Dunkley finished his hat-trick several minutes later, as Bradey Johnson (Lindsay, ON) fired a shot that was stopped by the pad of Darveau, but Dunkley pounced on the rebound to make it 4-2 Huskies, 9:11 into the second period.

The Huskies outshot the Aigles Bleus 21-11 in the second period and took a 4-2 lead into intermission.

The offensive explosion continued into the third period, as four more goals were scored, including three on the powerplay.

At 11:13 of the period, Huskies forwards Matthew MacDonald (Halifax, NS) and Cedric Ralph (Peterborough, ON) broke out on a two-on-one, with MacDonald patiently deking out a sliding defenceman before beating Darveau five-hole with a backhand finish, extending the Saint Mary's lead to 5-2.

The Aigles Bleus got one back several minutes later, as Michael Cyr scored a powerplay goal to cut the lead to 5-3, 14:03 into the third period.

But the Huskies would ice the game with two more powerplay goals – first it was Cedric Ralph breaking out on another two-on-one, this time with Derek Gentile – after receiving a pass at the blueline, Ralph held it for himself and scored his first of the postseason, putting the hosts up 6-3.

With under a minute remaining in regulation, Dunkley got his fourth point of the night as he found Reid Valade (Caledon, ON) streaking into the Aigles Bleus zone, with Valade firing a high shot over Darveau's glove to secure the 7-3 win.

Nathan Dunkley was named Player of the Game with three goals and an assist for the Huskies, while Dennis Busby (three assists), Cedric Ralph (one goal, one assists) and Derek Gentile (two assists) also recorded multi-point nights.

The Huskies outshot the Aigles Bleus 49-40 on the night, with Justin Sumarah stopping 37 shots for the win, while Nathan Darveau turned away 42 shots in defeat.
