Mercer scores brace in Huskies 2-0 win over Tigers

HALIFAX, NS – Saint Mary's midfielder Colby Mercer scored two goals – his first in a Huskies uniform – as the Huskies defeated their crosstown rivals the Dalhousie Tigers 2-0 on Thursday night in Halifax.

At the 17th minute, after DAL gave the ball away, Huskies forward Sean Freeman (Halifax, N.S.) pounced on the mistake and fed it across to Colby Mercer (Beaverbank, N.S.) who silenced the Dalhousie crowd early.

The Saint Mary's duo of Freeman and Mercer would be electric all night.

DAL nearly put in the equaliser off of a free kick that went over one attackers head but landed on Connor Manuel's foot, but he just missed the net.

When the whistle blew for halftime it was a 1-0 Saint Mary's lead.

The Huskies nearly struck again right after halftime off of a cross, but DAL's defenders stood up to the task.

Freeman, after weaving his way around the DAL defenders, sent a prayer into the box that ended up in a scramble, and would eventually be put in the back of the net by Mercer again to double the visitors lead to 2-0.

In what looked like a sure goal, Freeman sent a great ball through the DAL defenders up to Jalen Loague (London, Ont.), who was alone on a breakaway, but out of nowhere DAL's keeper Emmet Workman (Halifax, NS) made a miraculous save to keep it a 2-0 game.

Huskies midfielder Colby Mercer was named the player of the game in the win.

Huskies goalkeeper Ryan Davis (Lake Loon, NS) stopped one shot for the clean sheet, while Tigers goalkeeper Emmet Workman made eight saves in the loss.

The Huskies win improved their record to 3-2-0 on the campaign, while the Tigers dropped to 0-4-1 on the season. Both teams will play at home on Sunday at 3:15 p.m., with the Tigers hosting the STFX X-Men, while the Huskies host the Cape Breton CAPERS for their home-opener. GET TICKETS
