Huskies capture seven medals at Track & Field Championships
(Saint John, NB). The AUS Track and Field Championships were hosted by UNB, Saint John, NB on February 21 & 22nd. The Huskies walked away with a combined seven medals between the men's and women's team, highlighted by Andrew Peverill's gold in the men's 1500m.
The championships got off to an exciting start on day one with the women's pentathlon. Third year student-athlete Emily Batt claimed a silver on her performance in five events with a point total of 2768.
Later in day one, in the women's 1000m, second year athlete Bhreagh Burke captured the silver medal in a time of 3:02.68. With Jane Hergett of St.FX off the front, Burke led the chasing pack and on the bell lap, unleashed a kick that dropped the remaining Dalhousie and St.FX runners from her tail.
In the men's 1000m, third year athlete and men's team captain Andrew Peverill went head-to-head with his rival Hudson Grimshaw-Surette of Dalhousie. Peverill lead most of the race and in the end the two athletes crossed the line in an exciting photo finish. Peverill was edged out of gold by .01 of a second and took the silver in 2:26.54. The time ranks him #4 in the country and will qualify him for the U Sports Track and Field Championships.
To cap off day one, the men's 4x800m relay team took bronze in the event. The team composed of Kyle Caie, Joseph Stewart, Nicholas Burgers-Lamontagne and Andrew Peverill showed well and captured a medal in this event for the third year in a row.
Moving to day two, the women's and men's 1500m kicked off the excitement for the Huskies. Bhreagh Burke started her kick from well out with 500m to go in the race and was able to just pull away on the home stretch to claim the silver medal in the event in a time of 4:52.00.
In the men's, Andrew Peverill took over the lead right from the gun and would lead the race wire-to-wire, dropping his opponents with a fast-last lap to win the gold medal in a time of 3:54.73. Peverill will represent the Huskies in the event at the U Sports Championships and enters and ranks #8.
Saturday's events ended with the 4x400m relay, with the men's team winning bronze medal after a hard-fought battle and exciting race. The team includes Matthew Carlton, Kyle Caie, Joe Stewart and Andrew Peverill.
Andrew Peverill will represent Saint Mary's in the 1000m and 1500m at the U Sports Track and Field Championships (March 5-7) at the University of Alberta in Edmonton.
