Huskies post strong showing at Moncton Open

The Saint Mary's Huskies Track and Field team had their first competition of the new year this past weekend, with several athletes posting new personal bests at the Moncton Open at UdeM.

Kicking off Saturday morning was the 60m dash, which saw rookie Chad Smith win the event with a new personal best time of 7.07. Teammates Jonah Bucci (7.48), Jason Okunola (7.75), and Noah Martin (7.84) all ran personal best times in the event as well. Right after winning the 60m, Smith ran right over to the long jump pit and proceeded to win 2nd place in that event with a jump of 5.82m. In the women's 60m hurdles, rookie Raeden Black also took 2nd place, crossing the line with a new PB of 9.91 seconds. Black later equalled her high jump PB with a height of 1.40m.

The Huskies throwers had a phenomenal first meet with the full team. Second year athlete Mason Dunlop took home 3rd place and new PBs in both the men's shot put and weight throw, with distances of 14.00m and 12.54m respectively. Fergus Porter (11.65m) and Jonathon Vanwart (11.32m) also threw personal bests. On the women's side, Katie Pegg scored 2nd place with a PB throw of 10.93m, and teammate Amelia Jardine placed 3rd with another PB of 9.98m.

The men's 300m saw team captain Innis MacMullin run to a 3rd place finish with a time of 37.24, and teammate Noah Martin scoring a new personal best of 39.90. On the distance side, rookie Angie Gittens won 2nd place in the women's 600m with a new PB of 1:51.47, and third year Eli Ford placed 3rd in the men's race with another PB of 1:31.35. The 1000m race capped off the day in Moncton, which saw rookie Tadiwanashe Whingwiri cross the line with a new PB of 2:45.47.

After the excellent showing this weekend, the Huskies will be back in action January 19-20 as the team competes in the Athletics NS Indoor Open at the Canada Games Centre in Halifax.
