Beaumont drops career-high 34 points as Huskies top Axewomen 76-61

WOLFVILLE, NS – Saint Mary's forward Lucina Beaumont poured in a career-high 34 points, as the Huskies led from the opening tip to final whistle in a decisive 76-61 win over the Acadia Axewomen.

Beaumont and the Huskies dominated play from the jump, as the fourth year forward poured in 15 first quarter points, including finishing off a highlight worthy behind-the-back pass from guard Alaina McMillan (Brantford, ON), and the Huskies led 20-12 after the opening quarter.

The Huskies offence slowed down in the second quarter, as they were able to muster just 16 points and turned the ball over eight times, however the Axewomen weren't able to take full advantage, turning the ball over seven times themselves en route to a 17 point second quarter.

At the half, Beaumont led all scorers with 23 points, while forward Elizabeth Iseyemi (Dartmouth, NS) dropped in 10 for the Axewomen.

In the third quarter, the Axewomen were able to cut the Huskies lead to two, after Iseyemi scored five straight points, but a three-pointer from Clara Gascoigne (Dartmouth, NS) restored the five point Huskies lead, and the Huskies took a 58-51 lead into the final frame.

Late in the fourth quarter, Beaumont hit her final basket of the night, a three-pointer to extend their lead to 15 points, and they would go on to win by a decisive score of 74-61.

Beaumont was named Player of the Game, adding nine rebounds to her 34 points. Clara Gascoigne added 10 points, seven rebounds and three blocks for the Huskies, while Alaina McMillan contributed eight points, five assists and five steals.

The Axewomen were led by Iseyemi with a 21 point, 12 rebound double-double. Bianca Helmig chipped in 11 points, and Rio Yamazaki contributed 10 off the Axewomen bench.

The Huskies win secured the weekend sweep over the Axewomen. The Huskies will travel to Cape Breton next weekend to face the Capers on Friday and Saturday, while the Axewomen will host the Dalhousie Tigers on Wednesday night.
