WOLFVILLE, NS – The Saint Mary's Huskies completed a home-and-home sweep to open the 2024-25 Atlantic University Sport women's basketball season, defeating the Acadia Axewomen 73-65 on Saturday night in Wolfville, NS.
The game began on even ground, with both teams tied at 13 by the end of the first quarter. Acadia pushed ahead in the second, outscoring Saint Mary's 21-14 to lead going into halftime.
But Saint Mary's mounted a strong comeback in the third quarter, edging Acadia 24-19 to narrow the gap. The Huskies carried their momentum into the fourth, outscoring the Axewomen 22-12 to clinch the victory.
Huskies forward Lucy Beaumont earned player of the game honours, dominating with 29 points and 19 rebounds, while guard Clara Gascoigne contributed 18 points to the Huskies' offence.
Samantha Russell was named Acadia's player of the game, delivering a notable performance with her aggressive play on both ends. Sarah Delorey led Acadia's scoring efforts, putting up 15 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
Acadia now hits the road to face UPEI next weekend in Charlottetown, while Saint Mary's will host Memorial for a pair of games in Halifax. GET TICKETS
