Fraser leads Huskies to seventh straight win, 86-66 over REDS

HALIFAX, NS – Saint Mary's guard Aliyah Fraser hit five three-pointers on her way to a season-high 17 points, as the U SPORTS #4 ranked Huskies defeated the UNB REDS 86-66 in Atlantic University Sport women's basketball action on Saturday night at the Homburg Centre.

The Huskies got off to a strong start, with back-to-back three-pointers from guards Clara Gascoigne (Dartmouth, NS) and Aki Kobayashi (Osaka, Japan). The REDS battled back thanks to strong play from post Katie Butts (Ottawa, ON), cutting the lead to 12-9, but Saint Mary's responded on a 10-0 run, with back-to-back threes from Aliyah Fraser (New Glasgow, NS) and Lucina Beaumont (Fredericton, NB), pushing the lead to 22-9.

Saint Mary's hot shooting continued throughout the quarter, as they shot an impressive 5/7 from beyond the arc. A late three from Kobayashi extended their lead, and the hosts took a 34-17 lead into the first intermission.

The Huskies perimeter attack continued in the second quarter, with Fraser making a pair of threes, the second of which extended the lead to 47-25 midway through the quarter. A pair of Gascoigne free-throws ballooned the lead to 53-25, the largest of the night for the Huskies.

But the REDS responded nicely, thanks in part to guard Lillian Fuller (Dartmouth, NS) who converted a rare four-point play, and hit a three to end the quarter, cutting the deficit to 55-35.

The Huskies were led in the first half by Clara Gascoigne with 16 points, three rebounds and three assists, while Aki Kobayashi chipped in 10 points. The REDS were paced by 12 points and 10 rebounds from Katie Butts, while Fuller added seven points, all in the second quarter.

The third quarter began with another Aliyah Fraser three, her fourth of the afternoon, as the Huskies pushed the lead back up to 62-39. But Katie Butts continued to have her way inside, scoring 12 points in the third quarter alone. Late in the quarter, Aki Kobayashi showed her full-court play, as she drew a charge on one end and hit a jumper just before the buzzer, giving the Huskies a 74-54 lead after three quarters of play.

Saint Mary's went a bit deeper into their bench in the fourth quarter and saw the scoring efficiency drop off, but the defensive effort remained top notch, as they held the REDS to 12 fourth quarter points, thanks in part to great interior play from reserves forwards Evie Hargraves (Saint John, NB) and Emily Dikdan (Sudbury, ON), helping the Huskies seal their seventh straight win by a final score of 86-66.

Aliyah Fraser was named Player of the Game for the Huskies, scoring a season-high 17 points including 5/7 from three, and adding five rebounds. Clara Gascoigne stuffed the stat-sheet with 21 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals, while Lucy Beaumont chipped in a 17-point, 12-rebound double-double and Aki Kobayashi added 16.

The REDS were led by Katie Butts with a monster 31-point, 17-rebound double-double, while Lillian Fuller and Addie Mombourquette each chipped in 10 points.
