Scully records first AUS shutout as Huskies defeat Aigles Bleues 5-0

HALIFAX, NS – Saint Mary's goaltender Sophie Scully stopped 17 shots for the first shutout of her AUS career, while star forward Shae Demale posted a three-point night, as the Huskies defeated the Moncton Aigles Bleues 5-0 at the Dauphinee Centre on Friday night.

After being honoured pre-game for her recent selection as U SPORTS Top 8 Academic All-Canadian, Huskies forward Shae Demale (Red Deer, AB) wasted no time in getting the scoring started on Friday night.

Less than a minute into the game, Demale picked up a pass from defenceman Maddy McCleary  (Swift Current, SK), beat a defender and fired the puck past Moncton goaltender Annick Boudreau (Memramcook, NB) to put the Huskies up 1-0. The goal marked another milestone for Demale; the 100th regular season point of her AUS career.

Just over eight minutes later, Demale scored her second of the night, off a great no-look pass from linemate Ellen Laurence (Kentville, NS). Demale's 15th goal of the season gave the Huskies a 2-0 lead.

Moments later the Aigles Bleues went on the powerplay and generated their first offensive chances of the first period, but Huskies goaltender Sophie Scully (Ottawa, ON) shut the door to maintain the 2-0 lead.

With just over five minutes remaining in the first, the Huskies top line would score their third goal of the night, as Demale stole the puck away and Laurence deflected a McCleary shot into the Moncton goal for her fourth goal of the season.

The Huskies outshot the Aigles Bleues 11-3 in the first period and took a 3-0 lead into the second.

Moncton made a goaltending change to begin the second period, bringing in Audrey Berthiaume (St-Bruno, QC) who was tested early with a Huskies 5-on-3 powerplay, which was killed off by the Aigles Bleues.

Saint Mary's would score their fourth of the night with just over six minutes remaining in the second period, as Berthiaume made a great initial save on Maddy Corbett (Sydney, NS) but Kara MacLean (Antigonish, NS) scored off the rebound for her 10th goal of the season.

Just over three minutes later the Huskies scored their fifth and final goal, as defenceman Lauren Papp (Brampton, ON) fired a soft shot from the left boards, which took a bounce and beat Berthiaume to extend the Huskies lead to 5-0.

In the third period, the Aigles Bleues outshot the Huskies 10-9, thanks in part to three powerplay opportunities, but Scully was excellent, making several quality saves to preserve the shutout and 5-0 victory.

Sophie Scully was named Subway Player of the Game with 17 saves for the first shutout of her AUS career, while Demale (two goals, one assist), Laurence (one goal, one assist) and McCleary (two assists) recorded multi-point nights for the Huskies.

The Huskies win improves their record to 14-9-1 on the season. They'll be back on home ice next weekend, with a pair of pivotal games against the St. FX X-Women on Friday, and UPEI Panthers on Saturday, both at 7 p.m. at the Dauphinee Centre. GET TICKETS

The Aigles Bleues loss drops their record to 10-13-0 on the season. They'll be back on the ice tomorrow night, as they take on the Dalhousie Tigers, with puck drop scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Halifax Forum.
