Pelowich scores twice as Tommies defeat Huskies 2-0

HALIFAX, NS – St. Thomas forward Ekaterina Pelowich scored a pair of goals, as the Tommies defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 2-0 in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action on Friday night at the Dauphinee Centre in Halifax, N.S.

Early in the first period, the Huskies generated several scoring opportunities, but Tommies goaltender Katie Sweeney (Tecumseh, ON) was solid, turning away 10 shots in the first period alone.

The Tommies struck the scoresheet first, as defender Tristyn Endicott (Kerrobert, SK) broke up a Huskies clearance attempt with the puck bouncing onto the stick of Ekaterina Pelowich (Stouffville, ON) who evaded a Huskies defender and beat goaltender Ridleigh Hansen (Red Deer, AB) with a high shot to give the visitors a 1-0 lead, 17:28 into the first period.

The Huskies outshot the Tommies 10-9 in the first period, but it was the visitors who took a 1-0 lead into first intermission.

The Tommies seemed energized by their first period goal, as they began to dominate possession in the second period, outshooting the Huskies 10-8. Ridleigh Hansen made several tough glove saves for the Huskies, but Pelowich would double the lead late in the period, as she jumped on her own rebound and beat Hansen with a backhand, extending the Tommies lead to 2-0, 17:05 into the second period.

The Huskies attempted to cut into the Tommies lead in the third period, but continued to struggle to generate offensive opportunities. Saint Mary's forward Mia Faseruk (Winnipeg, MB) had the best scoring chance of the period, but Sweeney made a sprawling save to maintain her shutout, and the Tommies held on to a 2-0 win.

The Tommies outshot the Huskies 30-23 on the evening, with Katie Sweeney stopping 23 shots for the shutout, while Ridleigh Hansen turned away 28 attempts in defeat.

Ekatarina Pelowich was named Player of the Game, scoring both goals for the Tommies.

The Tommies second straight win improved their record to 7-4-2-1 on the season. St. Thomas will be back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 20 as they visit the UNB REDS (10-2-1-0) at 7 p.m. in Fredericton.

The Huskies loss drops their record to 6-5-1-1 on the season. Saint Mary's will look to bounce back on home ice on Saturday, Nov. 16, as they host the STFX X-Women (8-2-1-2) at 7 p.m. at the Dauphinee Centre. GET TICKETS
