Aigles Bleues defeat Huskies 2-1 in overtime
HALIFAX, NS – Moncton forward Shani Rossignol scored the overtime winner, as the Aigles Bleues defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 2-1 in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action on Friday night at the Dauphinee Centre in Halifax.
Early in the first period, the teams traded chances, with Huskies Avery Cant (Waterloo, ON) firing a shot from the slot and Aigles Bleus' Marie Soleil Simard (Wendake, QC) wiring a shot from the point, but both goaltenders stood firm on the early tests.
Minutes later, Huskies had back-to-back chances with Kara MacLean's (Antigonish, NS) shot from in front and Mia Faseruk's (Winnipeg, MB) chance dribbling through the arm of Aigles Bleu's netminder Amnick Boudreau (Memramcook, NB) and just wide of the net.
Seconds later, the Huskies headed onto the penalty kill. They successfully fended off the Aigles Bleus offensive push and looked to capitalize on a momentum shift.
With less than five minutes left in the period, the Huskies headed onto another penalty kill. The Aigles Bleus pounced on the opportunity as Valérie Haché (Shippagan, NB) made a cross-ice pass to teammate Erica Plourde (Pigeon-Hill, NB), who sent it over the shoulder of Huskies Ridleigh Hansen (Red Deer, AB) and into the back of the net, putting the Aigles Bleus ahead 1-0.
The Huskies looked to respond as Erin Denny (Eskasoni, NS), sitting in the slot, tried to slide it through the five-hole of Aigles Bleus goaltender Amnick Bouderau, but Boudreau shut the door.
The Huskies outshot the Aigles Bleus 10-7 in the first period, with the Aigles Bleus leading 1-0 heading into the intermission.
The Huskies started the second period with just over three minutes left on the powerplay. The Huskies had several chances, with Mia Faseruk coming close again with her shot glancing off the skate of Aigles Bleus netminder Amnick Boudreau.
The teams traded chances as the period progressed, however both goalies stood firm, keeping the score 1-0 in favor of the Aigles Bleus.
Under halfway in the second period, the Huskies headed onto another powerplay opportunity, looking to capitalize on the opportunity. The Huskies poured on the pressure, and with just over three minutes to go in the period, on a partial breakaway, Huskies Avery Cant put the puck in the top corner to tie the game 1-1.

With two minutes left in the period, the Huskies went on the penalty kill. The Aigles Bleus had a strong chance when Lianne Desforges (Clarence-Rockland, ON) tipped the puck in front of the net, but Huskies goaltender Ridleigh Hansen got the pad down in time.
The Huskies outshot the Aigles Bleus 23-11 in the second period, with the teams tied at one heading into the intermission.
Early on, the Huskies took a penalty and headed onto the penalty kill, looking to curb the offensive push from the Aigles Bleus. The Huskies successfully killed off their penalty, looking to take back the momentum.
A few minutes later, the Huskies had their offensive chance as they headed onto the powerplay. The Huskies best opportunity came from Kara MacLean's shot from the ringette line that went off the post.
Halfway through the period, Huskies Jillian Duggan streaked wide into the Aigles Bleus offensive zone and sent a shot onto the net, but Aigles Bleus netminder Amnick Boudreau made the save.
With just over six minutes left in the period, the Huskies headed onto the powerplay, looking to take the lead. The Huskies controlled the play with a few chances from Anna Barrington (St. John's, NL) and Ava Shearer (Windsor, NS); however, Aigles Bleus goaltender Amnick Boudreau stood strong.
The Huskies poured on the pressure as the minutes ticked down; however, the score remained tied at one as the teams headed into three-on-three overtime.
The Huskies outshot the Aigles Bleus 28-17 in the third period, with the teams tied at 1-1 heading into overtime.
Both teams started overtime strong, trading chances, and at just over a minute in, the Huskies headed onto the penalty kill. Huskies Ashley Penny (Lawrencetown, NS) chased down a short-handed puck and managed to get a shot off, but Aigles Bleus goaltender Amnick Boudreau made the save.
The Aigles Bleus responded just as their powerplay ended. Shani Rossignol (Notre Dame de Lourdes, NB) one-timed a shot from the point into the back of the Huskies' net to win the game 2-1.
Aigles Bleues forward Shani Rossignol was named Player of the Game, scoring the OT winner and leading the Aigles Bleues with four shots on goal.
The Huskies outshot the Aigles Bleues 31-19 on the evening, with Annick Boudreau stopping 30 shots for the win, while Ridleigh Hansen turned away 17 shots in defeat.
The Aigles Bleues win improves their record to 9-3-2-1 on the season. Moncton will continue their road swing on Saturday, Nov. 23, visiting the STFX X-Women (10-2-1-2) at 7 p.m.
The Huskies loss drops their record to 6-6-2-1 on the season. Saint Mary's will be back in action on Wednesday, Nov. 27, visiting their crosstown rivals the Dalhousie Tigers (10-4-1-0) at 7 p.m. at the Halifax Forum.
