Barrington scores twice as Huskies defeat Mounties 5-1

SACKVILLE, NB – Saint Mary's defender Anna Barrington scored the first two goals of her U SPORTS career, helping to lead the Huskies to a 5-1 win over the Mount Allison Mounties in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action on Friday night at the Tantramar Veterans Memorial Civic Centre.

It was the Mounties who took a first period lead as forwards Hailey Simoneau (Milton, ON) and Katie Anhalt (Winnipeg, MB) broke out on a two-on-one with Anhalt taking a pass and firing a shot that trickled past Huskies netminder Sophie Scully (Ottawa, ON) to give the hosts a 1-0 lead.

Saint Mary's outshot Mount Allison 15-7 through the opening 20 minutes, but were unable to beat Mounties goaltender Skye MacDonald (Torbrook, NS), who stopped all 15 shots she faced, as the hosts took a 1-0 lead into first intermission.

It was more of the same for the first three quarters of the second period, as the Huskies were unable to beat MacDonald on their first 24 shots of the night. But with five minutes remaining, the Huskies got an extended powerplay and took advantage in a major way.

First it was Saint Mary's forward Avery Cant (Waterloo, ON) who took a pass from Ava Shearer (Windsor, NS) and walked in, firing a wrist shot high over MacDonald's shoulder to tie the game at 1-1, 15:08 into the second period.

Less than two minutes later, the Huskies struck again with defender Anna Barrington (St. John's, NL) taking a pass from Cant and firing a shot through traffic that beat MacDonald to give the Huskies a 2-1 lead, 17:06 into the second period. The goal marked Barrington's first career AUS regular season goal.

It took just 42 seconds for Barrington to double her career tally, as she kept the puck in at the point and fired another long shot that trickled through for her second of the night, extending the Huskies lead to 3-1 at 17:48 in the second period.

The Huskies outshot the Mounties 13-9 in the second period, taking a 3-1 lead into intermission.

Saint Mary's scored twice more in the third period – first it was forward Jillian Duggan (Halifax, NS) who redirected a pass from Kara MacLean (Antigonish, NS) to make it 4-1, 3:21 into the third period.

Huskies forward Erin Denny (Eskasoni, NS) added a late empty net goal, as the Huskies secured the 5-1 victory.

Huskies defender Anna Barrington was named Player of the Game with two goals and an assist on the night. Avery Cant (one goal, two assists) and Charlotte Buffie (two assists) also recorded multi-point nights for the Huskies.

The Huskies win improves their record to 8-7-4-1 on the campaign. Saint Mary's will be back on the road next weekend, visiting the St. Thomas Tommies (10-6-2-1) on Saturday, Jan. 25 and UPEI Panthers (9-7-2-1) on Sunday, Jan. 26, with both games scheduled to drop the puck at 3 p.m.
