Huskies defeat Mounties 5-0 to keep playoff hopes alive

HALIFAX, NS – Saint Mary's forward Jillian Duggan scored twice and goaltender Ashley Imlach made 22 shots for the shutout, as the Huskies defeated the Mount Allison Mounties 5-0 in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action on Saturday afternoon at the Dauphinee Centre.

Early in the first period, the Huskies had several quality scoring opportunities, but Mounties goaltender Hannah Pagdato (Winnipeg, MB) shut the door.

It took 19:58 for the Huskies to finally beat Pagdato, but with less than two seconds remaining in the period, defender Abigail MacKenzie (Stellarton, NS) beat a defender wide and centred for forward Jillian Duggan (Halifax, NS) who fired a high shot to give the Huskies a 1-0 lead.

The Huskies outshot the Mounties 11-4 in the opening 20 minutes, taking a 1-0 lead into first intermission.

Saint Mary's doubled their lead just 47 seconds into the second period, as forward Gillian Lapierre (Port Coquitlam, BC) blocked a Mounties shot that sent Charlotte Buffie (Winnipeg, MB) on a breakaway, where Buffie made a sweet deke to the backhand to beat Pagdato five hole and make it 2-0.

Several minutes later, the Huskies added to their lead as captain Ashley Penney (Lawrencetown, NS) threw a pass towards goal that was deflected by forward Ava Shearer (Windsor, NS), extending the Huskies lead to 3-0, 13:46 into the second period.

Just under five minutes later, the Huskies scored a powerplay goal as forward Kara MacLean (Antigonish, NS) skated across the zone and fired a shot past a screened Pagdato to make it 4-0, 17:32 into the second period.

The Huskies outshot the Mounties 13-6 in the second period, and went into second intermission with a 4-0 lead.

Saint Mary's added to their lead just over a minute into the third period, as forward Jillian Duggan jumped on a loose puck in front of the Mounties goal. A scramble ensued with several bodies piled up in the crease, but the officials said the puck crossed the line, giving Duggan her second goal of the day and extending the Huskies lead to 5-0, which would go down as the final score.

The Huskies outshot the Mounties 36-22 on the night, with Ashley Imlach turning away 22 shots for the shutout, while Hanna Pagdato made 31 saves in defeat.

The Huskies win improves their record to 11-10-4-2 on the season. They'll be back in action on Sunday, Feb. 16, hosting the Moncton Aigles Bleues at 3 p.m. at the Dauphinee Centre. GET TICKETS
