
Huskies clinch playoff spot with 4-0 win over Aigles Bleues
HALIFAX, NS – Saint Mary's forward Charlotte Buffie scored a goal and an assist, and goaltender Ridleigh Hansen stopped 23 shots for the shutout, as the Huskies defeated the Moncton Aigles Bleues 4-0 in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action on Sunday afternoon at the Dauphinee Centre.
It was senior night for the Huskies women's hockey team, as they honoured graduating seniors Maddy Corbett (Sydney, NS), Allie Barter (Windsor, NS), Ashley Imlach (Newtonville, ON), Erin Denny (Eskasoni, NS) and Ashley Penney (Lawrencetown, NS) in a pre-game ceremony.
Early in the first period, the Aigles Bleues had several quality scoring opportunities, but Huskies goaltender Ridleigh Hansen (Red Deer, AB) shut the door.

Midway through the period, the Huskies broke through, as forward Kara MacLean (Antigonish, NS) carried the puck out wide and delivered a perfect pass to linemate Keyara Nelson (Belleville, ON), who lifted a shot over the glove of Aigles Bleues goaltender Molly Collin (St-Lin Laurentides, QC) to give Saint Mary's a 1-0 lead, 11:16 into the first period.

Just over a minute later, the Huskies doubled their lead as forward Kylie Kerr (Milton, ON) dished a pass to Abby McCarthy (Falmouth, NS) who lifted a high shot past Collin to make it 2-0, 12:28 into the first period.

The Huskies had another great chance late in the period, as forward Charlotte Buffie (Winnipeg, MB) broke out on a breakaway, but Collin made a nice save to maintain the two-goal deficit.
The Aigles Bleues outshot the Huskies 14-13 in the opening 20 minutes, but it was Saint Mary's who took a 2-0 lead into first intermission.
Midway through the second period, the Aigles Bleues were on the powerplay, but Saint Mary's defence stood strong, with great plays from defenders Eva MacKay (New Maryland, NB) and Anna Barrington (St. John's, NL) and several saves from Ridleigh Hansen to keep Moncton off the scoreboard.

The Huskies outshot the Aigles Bleues 10-4 in the second period, and maintained their 2-0 lead into the second intermission.
Early in the third period, Saint Mary's added to their tally, as forwards Jillian Duggan (Halifax, NS) and Charlotte Buffie broke out on a two-on-one, with Buffie feeding Duggan, who was stopped by Collin, but Buffie jumped on the rebound to make it 3-0, 3:34 into the third period.

Buffie and Duggan continued their amazing weekend moments later, as Buffie picked up the puck from linemate Gillian Lapierre (Port Coquitlam, BC) on the left boards, and skated in towards goal before dropping a perfect pass to Duggan, who made no mistake, firing a shot past Collin to make it 4-0, 7:46 into the third period.

Late in the third period, the Huskies thought they had scored their fifth goal of the night, as forward Abby McCarthy stuffed a rebound past Collin, but the officials waved it off.

Huskies forward Charlotte Buffie was named Player of the Game with a goal and an assist. The Huskies outshot the Aigles Bleues 37-23 on the night, with Ridleigh Hansen making 23 saves for the shutout, while Molly Collin stopped 33 shots in defeat.
With the win, the Huskies clinch a playoff spot, finishing the season as the #6 seed with a 12-10-4-2 record. The #6 seed Saint Mary's Huskies will take on the #3 seed St. Thomas Tommies in the Atlantic University Sport Women's Hockey Quarterfinal, with Game Two scheduled to be played Saturday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. at the Dauphinee Centre. The Aigles Bleues loss drops their record to 16-9-2-1 on the season. Moncton finishes the season as the #4 seed and will face the #5 seed Dalhousie Tigers (15-9-3-1) in the AUS quarterfinal, with schedule information to be confirmed.
