Huskies win fourth straight, defeating Aigles Bleues in straight sets

HALIFAX, NS - The Saint Mary's Huskies won their fourth straight match, defeating the Moncton Aigles Bleues in straight sets (25-20, 25-16, 25-20) in Atlantic University Sport women's volleyball action on Sunday afternoon at the Homburg Centre in Halifax.

The first set saw back-and-forth action, with the Huskies opening up a 10-5 lead after a block from middle Anna Liniewski (Burnaby, BC), but the Aigles Bleues came storming back, with a Cassidy Martin (Saint-Charles de Kent, NB) service ace tying the match at 10-10. With the set tied 17-17, Huskies left side Emilia Mikanovich (Minsk, Belarus) went on a service run, including two aces, giving the Huskies a 22-17 lead. A kill from Huskies outside hitter Breanna Golding (Pickering, ON) finished off the set, giving Saint Mary's a 25-20 first set win.

The Huskies picked up where they left off in the second set, with a kill from right side Sydney Fader (Dartmouth, NS) opening up a 5-1 advantage. Golding continued her strong play with back-to-back kills, extending the lead to 17-8. Moncton was able to cut into the lead, but Anna Liniewski finished off the set with a kill, giving Saint Mary's the second set, 25-16.

In the third set, Moncton opened up a quick 5-0 lead off of strong service by Cassidy Martin. But back-to-back Golding service aces and a pair of Mikanovich kills put the Huskies back on top 7-6. Moncton responded with a service run from middle Angèle Turene (La Broquerie, MB) and strong play from Sophie Hédou (Edmunston, NB) to retake the lead 11-8. But Saint Mary's proved too strong, with service aces from Mikanovich, Fader and setter Grace Blaskovits (Kelowna, BC), and Fader finished off the match with a kill to give the Huskies the third set 25-20.

The Huskies offence was led by 12 points from each of Breanna Golding (nine kills, three aces, seven digs) and Emilia Mikanovich (seven kills, four aces, 14 digs, two blocks), while setter Grace Blaskovits dished out a match-high 29 assists. Saint Mary's had a season best 11 service aces, with Golding, Mikanovich, Fader and Blaskovits serving up the heat.

The Aigles Bleues were led by eight points from outside hitter Evette Petherick (Port Hope, ON) while middle Kyana Sivret (Rivière-à-la-Truite, NB) contributed six points, and Cassidy Martin dished out 16 assists.

With the win, the Huskies improve to 4-2 on the campaign. They'll be back on home court next week, hosting the Memorial Sea-Hawks (4-2) on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7 p.m., and Saturday, Nov. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Homburg Centre.

The Aigles Bleues loss drops their record to 0-6 on the season. They'll be back in action on Friday, Nov. 15, hosting the UNB REDS (2-4) at 7 p.m.
