Saint Mary's Huskies to celebrate Black Heritage Night on Feb. 2

HALIFAX, NS - The Saint Mary's University Department of Athletics is proud to announce its annual celebration of Black Heritage Month this February, including our Black Heritage Night on Friday, February 2nd.

Throughout the month, Saint Mary's University will be highlighting some of our many incredible Black student-athletes whose impacts and achievements are important pieces of Huskies history, today, and every day.

On February 2nd, Saint Mary's will showcase a range of cultural events and activities at our women's and men's basketball games against the UNB REDS, and men's hockey game as we host the UPEI Panthers.

The day will begin with a vendor market brought to you by the Black Business Initiative, offering a selection of unique products and services from six different local Black-owned businesses.

Spectators can also expect to be entertained by the captivating performance by members of the Maritime Centre for African Dance during halftime of the basketball games and the soulful melodies of the Black National Anthem 'Lift Every Voice' sung by Eriana Willis before each game.

At our men's hockey game, we will be welcoming the Black Youth Ice Hockey Program for a ceremonial puck-drop.

In addition, through a partnership with the Black Cultural Centre of Nova Scotia, we will have informational displays regarding Black culture and heritage in Nova Scotia, on display in the Homburg Centre throughout the month of February.

"Black Heritage Day is a celebration of the rich cultural heritage of our Black community and we are thrilled to be able to offer this opportunity for our students, alumni, and wider community to come together and celebrate," said Scott Gray, Saint Mary's Director of Athletics and Recreation.

This is the second consecutive year that Saint Mary's Department of Athletics and Recognition has hosted a Black Heritage Night, with the ambition that this will provide a platform for the university to celebrate and recognize the contributions of Black Canadians and their impact on Canadian society.
