Nsoseme and Shearer named Huskies Athletes of the Week: Jan. 27-Feb. 2, 2025

Men's basketball forward Eliel Nsoseme and women's hockey forward Ava Shearer have been named Huskies Athletes of the Week, sponsored by Freeman's Little New York Halifax, for the week ending February 2nd, 2025.

Eliel Nsoseme, a fifth year forward from Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, is the Huskies male athlete of the week for the week of Jan. 27-Feb. 2, 2025.

In Friday's 83-76 win over the Cape Breton Capers, Nsoseme was dominant, scoring 17 points, hauling in 15 rebounds and blocking five shots in just 25 minutes of floor time.

With the game on the line in the fourth quarter, Nsoseme took his play to another level, scoring seven points on 3/4 shooting, adding seven rebounds, three blocks and one assist in the fourth quarter alone.

On the season, Nsoseme leads the AUS in rebounding (11.2 rebounds per game) and blocked shots (2.8 blocks per game). He also ranks third on the Huskies in scoring (13.5 points per game).

Friday's win improved the Huskies record to 6-9 on the season, moving them back into the playoff picture. The Huskies will be on the road next weekend, visiting Cape Breton on Friday and STFX on Saturday, before returning to the Homburg Centre to host the Acadia Axemen on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 8 p.m. GET TICKETS

Ava Shearer / Women's Hockey / Windsor, NS / 1st year / Science

Ava Shearer, a first year forward from Windsor, NS, is the Huskies female athlete of the week for the week of Jan. 27-Feb. 2, 2025.

In Sunday's 3-2 shootout win over the STFX X-Women, Shearer scored the Huskies second goal, giving them a lead in the third period. 

Over two games this weekend, Shearer scored one goal, had a +1 plus/minus rating, and recorded five shots on goal.

On the season, Shearer is tied for second among all first year players in the AUS with 11 points (five goals and six assists) in 24 games played. Her 11 points is tied for second on the Huskies, and she also leads the team in game-winning goals (2) and ranks third on the Huskies in goals (5), shots on goal (56) and fourth in assists (6).

Shearer helped lead the Huskies to a crucial three points this weekend, moving them back into the playoff picture. The Huskies will be back on home ice on Friday, Feb. 7, hosting the St. Thomas Tommies at 7 p.m. at the Dauphinee Centre. GET TICKETS
