Gentile and Duggan named Huskies Athletes of the Week: Feb. 10-16, 2025

Men's hockey forward Derek Gentile and women's hockey forward Jillian Duggan have been named Huskies Athletes of the Week, sponsored by Freeman's Little New York Halifax, for the week ending February 16th, 2025.

Derek Gentile, a fourth year forward from Sydney, NS, is the Huskies male athlete of the week for the week of Feb. 10-16, 2025.

Gentile scored seven points (two goals and five assists) over a pair of Huskies wins this week.

In Wednesday's 9-4 win over the Dalhousie Tigers, Gentile recorded three assists and one shot on goal.

In Friday's 11-5 win over the STFX X-Men, Gentile scored two goals and added two assists, recording four shots on goal and a +3 plus/minus rating.

Gentile finishes the 2024-25 season as the leading scorer in all of U SPORTS men's hockey with 47 points (19 goals and 27 assists) in 29 games played. In addition to leading the AUS in points, Gentile led the conference in shorthanded goals (3), and finished second in goals (19), assists (27) and game-winning goals (4).

Gentile and the Huskies finished the regular season with a 17-11-2 record, good for third place in the AUS standings. They'll host the #6 seed UPEI Panthers in the AUS Men's Hockey quarterfinals, with game one to be played Wednesday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Dauphinee Centre. GET TICKETS

Jillian Duggan / Women's Hockey / Halifax, NS / 4th year / Science - Biology

Jillian Duggan, a fourth year forward from Halifax, NS, is the Huskies female athlete of the week for the week of Feb. 10-16, 2025.

Duggan scored four points (three goals and one assist) over a pair of Huskies wins this week, helping the team clinch a playoff spot.

In Saturday's 5-0 win over the Mount Allison Mounties, Duggan was named Player of the Game, scoring a pair of goals including the game-winner, and recorded five shots on net and a +4 plus/minus rating.

In Sunday's 4-0 win over the Moncton Aigles Bleues, Duggan scored a goal and added an assist, recording four shots on goal and a +2 plus/minus rating.

Duggan finished the season as the Huskies leading goal-scorer, ranking 10th in the conference with 10 goals in 28 games played. She added four assists tying her for second on the Huskies with 14 points, and led the team with two game-winning goals and 83 shots on goal.

With this weekend's wins, the Huskies clinch a playoff spot, finishing the season as the #6 seed with a 12-10-4-2 record. The #6 seed Saint Mary's Huskies will take on the #3 seed St. Thomas Tommies in the Atlantic University Sport Women's Hockey Quarterfinal, with Game Two scheduled to be played Saturday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. at the Dauphinee Centre. GET TICKETS
