Dunlop and Mikanovich named Huskies Athletes of the Week: Feb. 17-23, 2025

Men's track & field athlete Mason Dunlop and women's volleyball left side Emilia Mikanovich have been named Huskies Athletes of the Week, sponsored by Freeman's Little New York Halifax, for the week ending February 23rd, 2025.

Mason Dunlop / Men's Track & Field / Middle Musquodoboit, NS / 3rd year / Commerce

Mason Dunlop, a third year thrower from Middle Musquodoboit, NS, is the Huskies male athlete of the week for the week of Feb. 17-23, 2025.

Dunlop won a gold and bronze medal at this weekend's AUS Track & Field Championship in Saint John, NB.

On day one of the competition, Dunlop won the men's shotput, throwing a school record and personal best 15.95 metres. That throw also qualifies him for the U SPORTS Nationals, and currently ranks sixth in the country.

On day two of the competition, Dunlop competed in the weight throw, placing third with a distance of 14.59 metres. 

For his performance, Dunlop was named the Atlantic University Sport Male Field Athlete of the Year.

Dunlop will next compete in U SPORTS Nationals at the shotput, March 6-8 in Windsor, ON. Last season, Dunlop won a silver medal in shot put at the AUS Championships, and went on to the U SPORTS Nationals, where he finished 11th in the country. 

Emilia Mikanovich / Women's Volleyball / Minsk, Belarus / 3rd year / Biology

Emilia Mikanovich, a third year left side from Minsk, Belarus, is the Huskies female athlete of the week for the week of Feb. 17-23, 2025.

Mikanovich led the Huskies attack in a pair of semifinal games against the UNB REDS, averaging over 19.0 points, 15.5 kills, 12.5 digs, three aces and one assist over a pair of matches.

In Saturday's 3-2 loss to the REDS, Mikanovich led the Huskies with a match-high 27 points on 24 kills, two aces, and a block, adding 18 digs and two assists.

In Sunday's 3-0 win over the REDS, Mikanovich scored 11 points on seven kills and a match-high four aces, adding seven digs. 

Mikanovich was also named the AUS Most Valuable Player and a first team all-star this week.

The Huskies will host the UNB REDS for a decisive game three of their AUS semifinal series on Monday, Feb. 24, at 7 p.m. at the Homburg Centre. Come on out and pack the Homburg to support your Huskies! GET TICKETS
