#6 ranked X-Men defeat Huskies 5-0 to snap six game win streak

ANTIGONISH, NS - The Saint Mary's Huskies had a six-game win streak snapped by the U SPORTS #6 ranked STFX X-Men, who defeated the Huskies 5-0 on Saturday afternoon at STFX Stadium in Antigonish, NS.

The X-Men played a strong possession game early on, and Isaac VanWychen (Middle Musquodoboit, NS) opened the scoring on a nifty passing play involving Logan Reick (Cambridge, ON) and Kyle Cordeiro (Oakville, ON) in the eighth minute of play.

Six minutes later, Cordeiro made it 2-0, getting the last touch on a Charlie Waters (Blackpool, ENG) rebound, following a cross from Samuel Barrowcliffe (Princeton, ON).

It was a physical first half with a handful of fouls committed by each team. STFX held the lion's share of the ball, preventing the Huskies from mustering much of an attack. Barrowcliffe again played set-up man on STFX's next goal, crossing to an open Cordeiro for the highlight volley finish in the 33rd minute.

STFX led 8-0 in shots on goal at halftime with a 3-0 advantage on the scoreboard.

The STFX offence continued to provide chances to increase the lead early in the second half. Barrowcliffe almost added to the lead in the 59th minute, but a last moment save by Huskies goalie Ryan Davis (Lake Loon, NS) kept the ball out.

The X-Men came close to adding another in the 70th minute, with Myroslav Zastavny (Toronto, ON) hitting one just wide off a one-touch shot from in tight. However, a great run followed by a left foot shot from Dyan Vil (Ottawa, ON) did hit twine, making it 4-0 in the 76th minute.

Cameron Shaw (Ottawa, ON) added another minutes later, breaking in alone off a superb heel pass from Cordeiro.

STFX goalie Samuel Diltz (New Market, ON) had one save while picking up the clean sheet, and Davis made eight saves in the loss for SMU.

X-Men midfielder Kyle Cordeiro was named Player of the Game with two goals and an assist.

STFX player of the game Kyle Cordeiro (Oakville, ON) had two goals and an assist in the win, which moved STFX's record to 5-0-2, while the Huskies drop to 6-3-0.

The X-Men win improves their record to 5-0-2 on the season. They'll be back in action on Sunday as they host the Memorial Sea-Hawks (3-3-1) at 3:15 p.m. in Antigonish, N.S.

The Huskies loss snaps a six game win streak, dropping their record to 6-3-0 on the campaign. Saint Mary's will continue their road trip on Sunday as they visit the Cape Breton Capers (5-0-2) in Sydney, N.S. at 3:15 p.m. AT.
